Guess how much Jewel-Osco workers earn?

Jewel cashiers, baggers, clerks and stockers are barely scraping by with $9/hour salaries. Pharmacy technicians are also barely scraping by only making $11-12 an hour surprisingly.

The dream is to keep working until you become a store director and can make over $84,000 a year, a huge step up from $9-12 an hour.

Jewel-Osco is a grocery store that is part of the SuperValu brand.

Two Franks, with the last names, Vernon Skiff and Ross, founded the company in 1899. They originally called it the “Jewel Tea Company” and their business supplied tea and other condiments to the Chicago area.

Moving from wagons to deliver goods, to cars, and now the trucks it uses today, the store has come a long way, and also offers a pharmacy section.

The drug retailer Osco was also purchased by SuperValu in 1961, and eventually in 2010 SuperValue combined the names so the store now runs under the name Jewel-Osco, a full grocery-pharmacy to meet your daily purchase needs.

  1. I wanted to commend Jewel Store 3473 employee, Eric, who is a service clerk, at this Des plaines, IL store. Having noticed how hard he works in the parking lot, I became more impressed with his honesty when I discovered that he found the wallet I had forgotten to take from the shopping cart. Not only did he turn it in to the Service Desk, everything was intact- cash, credit cards, identification, etc. I wanted to give him a cash reward but was told that was against Jewel policy. Thanks to Jewel for such an honorable employee.

    1. I’ve several receipts with survey codes to enter to win $100 gift card, but your website won’t let me click on which receipts. Can’t find any way to enter.tried all available Jewel sites.please advise

      1. I agree-no matter what you do, it will NOT let you select the receipt and enter to win….
        Way to go Jewel!

  2. When I was in the store on August 11 I bought some Sprite and coke. I placed the pop in my basket bu the lady at the cashier did not tell me I had to tell her my telephone number to get the savings so I was charged 9.99 instead of 8.99. I called com service and they said to bad and would not refund my money.

  3. I have entered this several times and have never won a gift card I shop at Jewel I get my prescription at Osco I know many of the staff there I always get their employee number and do surveys on their customer service skills and I have never won a gift card and then sometimes when I go in they tell me that I’ve done a survey already and that’s not true I know you can only do it once a month

  4. I shop the Jewel/Osco in Franklin Park, Illinois. There is one employee in Osco, Mary Longo who goes above and beyond with all customers. She is always smiling, happy and very helpful. If a product is not on the shelf, she will find it for you. I have seen her even escort older customers to the check out counter and help them with there purchases. More employees should be like her.

  5. I tried to do one today. It stopped at 80% near the end & wouldn’t move. I found so many good deals today especially the Johnsonville sausage that I made Spaghetti for 7 families plus my Pastor. I wanted to put in a good word for Anita the cashier & Ed the Bagger. They were extremely helpful because I only had one 1 bag with & we all worked it out. Jeri

  6. We shopped at Jewels in Munster IN today and were very surprised! Sue W in bakery was so friendly and helpful! She gets an absolute 10 in our book! We will be back again for sure! We even reserved platter of treats for Labor Day ! Sue made us Jewel customers now! Thanks!

  7. Kanwal Malik at the Andersonville Jewel is consistently friendly and helpful. She, along with a lot of other very kind and thoughtful employees, is one of the best reasons to shop Jewel!

  8. My wife and I have shopped at your Carol Stream store on Army Trail since it opened many years ago. Ellen and Jackie in the meats department are a 10 + for us, always polite and asking how my family is doing, making sure i get the best quality filet’s and ribs for my money and as representatives of Jewel, always busy, and very professional.

  9. I went to my Waukegan Road Glenview IL Jewel today to spend $50 and use the $10 coupon I received in my newspaper, as well as a few smaller connected coupons for $1.00 off when you spend $50.00. Well, the bagger told me I would only have to pay $.79 for the 2 liter Pepsi if I bought 5, and I replied that I was going to get it free if I spent $50. I turned out spending $149.00 and in searching for and giving the cashier a $1.00 coupon for dry cat food, I forgot about all the other valuable coupons, even though the cashier asked me if I didn’t have more coupons to redeem. For some reason, I insisted I didn’t. After I loaded the car, I returned to the car, and the lady at the service counter; which doubles as a short order check-out, efficiently took my receipt and gave me the choice of cash or a credit card credit. Her name is Maureen, and I want to give her and the original cashier Kyle, a shout out, for their help. (I wish Kyle had tried even harder to get through to me, but he asked me twice, and I said I didn’t have coupons. Still, Maureen made it right with refunding the coupon amounts on my credit card). Bravo, Jewel.

  12. Andrew in the meat department at the jewel in Addison, ill. I needed a lot of organic ground beef for our huge BBQ for Saturday. Thursday he said he would have some by Saturday morning. Around 8a.m. I went to pick it up, and Andrew knew, and before you know it, he brought out a big box of 12 packages of my organic ground beef. He came thru for me and my friends. Thanks to him its going to be a great day. THANK YOU ANDREW!

  13. There was a nice man that helped me and even Wales me through the store to find what I was looking for his name was perry

  14. I’ve been a longtime customer of the Jewel-Osco stores in the suburban Chicago area. However, within the past few months, I’ve had somewhat disappointing experiences at store #2504 in Merrionette Park, IL. This is normally my “go-to” grocery store, and will remain so, but I wanted to pass this information along, regardless.

On August 11th, 2018 I purchased $80+ worth of groceries at that store. During the transaction with the cashier, I handed him approximately $3.00 worth of manufacturer’s coupons related to certain products which I had purchased. Appparently, the cashier was so involved with a conversation with the “bagger” in the next lane over about someone’s ex-girlfriend who had been in the store that he didn’t process any of the coupons I had given him, though he did keep the coupons and neither did he hand them back to me. I wasn’t until I was putting the bags of groceries into my car that it dawned on me that I didn’t remember seeing him process the coupons nor did I see any evidence on the receipt that he handed to me. I immediately returned to the Customer Service desk in the store and explained to the woman there what had happened. She took my word for the mishap without question and immediately gave me a cash refund of $3.07 (including sales tax.)

On September 8th, 2018 I purchased a bone-in rib roast at the same store in Merrionette Park. The weekly sales advertisement for Jewel-Osco indicated that the bone-in rib roasts were on sale for $6.99 per pound, marked down from their “normal” price through the end of that day. At the fresh-meat counter, I explained to the young man there that I wanted a two-rib roast and he selected a 6-pound roast from the front of the display case. He took it around to the rear of the case to weigh and wrap it. Since he and I had been speaking about bone-in rib roasts, and that’s what he selected and wrapped, I didn’t check the price tag he attached to the package at that time. When the young lady at the Express Checkout lane asked me if I was going to cut it in half to make two ribeye steaks, I was surprised, but answered that it was purchased as a standing rib roast. Again, it didn’t completely register with me that there was anything “wrong” until I got to my car and looked at the receipt and then the roast. I was shocked to find that the young man at the fresh-meat counter had labeled my two-rib bone-in roast as “Boneless Ribeye Steaks” which were sale-priced at $8.99 per pound instead. Again, I immediately took the roast and receipt back to the Customer Service desk in the store and explained to the woman there what had happened. She arranged to have the roast re-weighed and re-labeled correctly as a “Beef Rib Roast Bone In”. She calculated the difference in cost and for whatever reason, gave me a cash refund of $10.79 instead of the $12.00 amount ($2.00 per pound difference on a 6-pound piece of meat.)

While both of these “problems” were addressed quickly and without question, I feel that this is indicative of a noticeable lessening of the customer-centric experience which Jewel-Osco customers have come to expect. I do intend to keep patronizing this particular store, but will be sure to be watching things a bit more closely in future visits.

  15. Shopping today charged 56.00 for turkey brought attention to over charge corrected and charged 17.12 also coke prices posted all over 2.88 I was charged 5.99. 18. I have been a long-time customer of Jewel Osco on Roselle and Wise Rd in Schaumburg, Illinois. Whenever I need prescriptions filled, I love when Karen is working in the pharmacy department!! She is extremely kind, patient, always does what’s best for the customer’s needs, she is very thorough and always has a smile to offer. No matter how busy the pharmacy might be, Karen has a way of making each person feel as if he or she is her number one priority, while continuing to work at a time-effective pace.
According to Karen, she has worked at Osco for over three decades. What a wonderful individual and superb staff member! Thank you Karen, for doing such a terrific job while offering much-needed kindness and a smile.

I have never seen him interact except in a pleasant manner…EVEN with customers who seem to be having a “bad” day. The store should “feel” lucky to have such a person on staff!

  27. I visit a Jewel Store 2 to 3 times a week and one of the common inappropriate behaviors I experience is the floor staff seems to think that’s it’s okay to have casual conversation with each other and ignore the customer as though we are invisible. They also use language among each other inappropriate and unprofessional in the presence of customers and is never checked by management. I find that to be offensive. This doesn’t happen at just one location but the locations that I visit on 61st and Cottage Grove and 75th and Stony. There needs to be further training of management as well as staff of customer contact etiquette. As a Business owner in the community, I assume the responsibility of my employees behavior that reflects me and thT I make sure that they understand that our customers are to receive the utmost in respect and professional service as well as what we say. You cannot assume that employees know the difference, you must make certain. that they understand it everyday before they take to the floor. If you do this you will improve customer satisfaction and appreciation and ot will reflect on your bottom line. I will be on the watch for a noticeable attention to this concern in my future visits to your stores. Hopefully you will take this as constructive observation and make the necessary adjustments. Thank you

  28. I shopped at Jewel today at 3:34 pm. The cashier told me to put my phone number in the machine instead of her doing it. The machine only took part of my phone number. I had to wait until the manager on duty came to cancel the order and start over. When I completed the purchase of one item, I noticed that there was no indication of how many points toward gas I had off. I returned to the manager’s desk. There was no one there . I called “Anyone here! ” several times. No one came. I returned to the cashier. Then I saw the manger on duty coming. I went back to her desk. She entered the points I had coming. However, when I looked at my receipt that she gave me, the receipt showed an incorrect number of points. My purchase was for $11.99 plus tax. The points I received was 10 instead of 11. I would rate my experience as an F.

  29. IT IS ALWAYS BRUTALLY DIFFICULT TO FIND THE CORRECT SURVEY FORM FROM JEWEL TO BE ABLE TO FILL OUT FOR YOUR $100.00 WHY DON’T YOU WIZARDS MAKE IS SIMPLE INSTEAD OF SO DIFFICULT. THIS HAS BEEN THE CASE FOR AGES. THERE ARE ABOUT 15 DIFFERENT SITES, STATING THAT THEY ARE RELATED TO JEWEL, WHICH IS BULLSHIT. TRY ALL CAPS. I SIMPLY DO NOT FILL THEM OUT VERY OFTEN AS I DO NOT WANT TO DO BATTLE WITH THE LAPTOP TO DO YOUR COMPANY A FAVOR. REALLY SAD, THINGS RARELY CHANGE WITH JEWEL CORPORATE.

    1. “Brutally difficult” is well put. I don’t understand why it can’t just appear as the first site when I type in the suggested website address.

  30. Jewel is the worst grocery store chain in the Chicagoland area. Dominick’s death and Ultra’s pull-back breathed some temporary life in Jewel, but they are swirling around the edge of the bowl now…

  31. Once again I was amazed with the Bakery dept located in store 2160 Palos Park ,il I ordered a full size sheet cake for a large family party and asked for a lot of wording on the cake …. I mean a lot of wording ! Kathy the official decorator extrodonair once again outdid herself ! This is a yearly order by the way and I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if she ran off like the wind upon seeing my face !! Everyone that works in the Bakery dept are very professional and extremely patient . You should be very proud of this store and your manager . Kudos to all ! Thank you,Maddy Oneill

  32. I was at the Jewel on 95th Stony Island, Chicago Il. Erica Thomas made my experience there amazing. Erica was friendly, approachable and helpful. I had a question and she made me feel as if I was an old friend. Thank you Erica Thomas!!!!!
