Started in 1959 by Leon Levine when he was only 21, the Family Dollar has grown to over 8,000 stores in every state except Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington.

Levine, the founder, was a classic entrepreneur at heart even before he started FD at age 21. In 1956, he bought a chenille bedspread factory in North Carolina while he was still in college.

The budding entrepreneur spirit of his attended the nearby beautiful Wingate college during the day and then worked his factory at night.

Leon was inspired when he visited a store in Kentucky where everything was priced for under a $1.

This gave him the inspiration to start the Family Dollar, which he did later that year. He was an action taker for sure, and we are all happy about that, since the Family Dollar now exists because of his perseverance!

The only difference between his store and the dollar store he was inspired by, was that his store had a $2, not $1 price cap.

In 1962 he actually increased the price limit to $3 in his stores and kept that ceiling until 1972, after which he kept increasing the price to meet supply and demand.

Today the store has even branched out to sell higher priced electronic and phone plan items.

In 1970 the store’s stock went public trading for $14.50 per share. In 2014, the Dollar Tree purchased the Family Dollar for the hefty sum of $8.5 billion.

January 22 2015, the Dollar Tree sale was approved, and now the Family Dollar operates under its owner company Dollar Tree. However, it retains its own name and brand, as people are familiar and love the Family Dollar name.

    2. I love this store more than that. Being on disibility it has made it possible to get all the items I could not get before. Good and helpful salespeople and has most brand items, but with lower prices.

  3. this family dollar in lawrenceville Ga, where do i began. 1st off never greeted when you walk in there is no one in the front watching out for who comes in there is only 2 employees and both are always away from the register stocking. customers have to wait in front of resister while clark takes her sweet time walking up most times I’ve been in the store I’ve had to yell my self “I’m ready”. never get a “thank you for your patience”, “sorry about your wait” ,” excuse the inconvenience” nothing and no “thanks for shopping”.

Today I went into Family Dollar in Rocky Mount 01611 I am a loyal customer I love your little prices I love when I go in I can save a lot of money but today was horrible day I get along with all the cashiers but I see they just hired a new cashier she was so rude and disrespectful she was more in a dude’s face that was the Third customer behind me instead of bagging my items upShe needs to learn how to respect customers other than a bad day with the cashier l give your store a 9

My experience was horrible I went to go shopping and my niece had to use the bathroom she’s only 5yrs old she kept asking the cashier if she could use their bathroom she was in tears from trying to hold it they kept refusing her and told her they can’t let her cause of people doing drugs well if a 5 yr old is shooting up in a bathroom something is wrong so they can not use that excuse sorry it’s stupid so I told them if they can’t let a 5 yr old use the bathroom then someone would be buying her new pants if she pees in hers cause it’s rediculous to do that to a child I even told the manager she can walk the 5yr old and 7 yr old to the bathroom if it made her happy and she had a attitude with the girls and was rude as can be I would never want to go back there again they lost me and my family and friends as a customer I wouldn’t even give that place a one point if anything their rudeness deserves the place to shut down. You can’t use a excuse over not letting a 5 yr old use their bathroom and the excuse be over drugs come on she’s 5 not a teenage punk that does drugs.

I’ve heard from at least 5 people complaining around me that the employees and manager from Culloden wv is rude and won’t let no one use their bathrooms kids or not and they use the excuse of drug activity well let the kids use the bathroom and accompany them to the bathroom if you have any problems don’t let kids suffer cause of what druggies does. Not everyone is a druggie.

  10. THIS IS CONCERNING THE FAMILY DOLLAR STORE IN JACKSON, MINNESOTA……..THIS IS THE FILTHIEST MOST DIRTY ,UNORGANIZED MESS I HAVE EVER BEEN IN!!!!!! EVERYTHING IS IN DISRAY. TOTALLY DISGUSTING!!!! THE HELP CAN RARELY BE FOUND AT ANY TIME- ANY ONE COULD WALK OUT WITH MERCHANDISEAT ANYTIME. THERE ARE 3 PEOPLE WORKING THERE AND ONE IS HANDICAPPED AND SHOULD NOT BE LEFT ALONE BECAUSE SHE HAS A HARD TIME WORKING ALONE. MOST OF THE TIME ONLY 1 WORKING AT A TIME. THE STORE IS TOTALLY A DISGRACE. EMPLOYEES AND ALL!

  11. I shop at the Family Dollar in Forest City, North Carolina. I am 73 years old and a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. The manager is Sam. I have never seen a store as immaculate and “spit shined” as is this particular one. It outclasses any other establishment in this town. As a young man many, many, many years ago, I worked in a store to earn money for college. I know what happens when the trucks deliver and the shelves need to be stocked and the customers needed to be taken care of, and I can tell you without hesitation that the employees at this “Family Dollar” do not slow down. They are all in there working with Sam leading the way. They are friendly, professional and courteous at all times. They give me a reason to avoid Walmart, and I thank them for that. The aisles are clean, the floor shines, the shelves are stocked and the employees are great. What more can a person ask for?

  13. I just to make a complain and let you know that at the store #05141 at 3910 Doniphan Dr. at El Paso, Tx. The manager, she is an untrusty lady she do not give the merchandise to the coustmer rigth. I just bougth some gorceries on November 28, 2018 14:47 ticket 05141 01 668689 2434 and I came back today to claim my groceries and she told that she can not refund anything. I sked to check the camera of store and she told me that she can not.
    Plesae check your camera and you will see that she is a Thefer. I will not came to buy at any one dollasr store.
    Customer at one dollar PLEASE CHECK YOUR MERCHANDISE AFTER YOU TO THE CASHIER They dont give you your groceries complete. They make fraud.

  14. I was pleasantly surprised as the inside of the store was pretty large. There was a lot of food for sale! I walked around quickly as I went in for a few items while my hubby waited in the car. I will definately go back again. The store is sort of like a mini walmart!

Awful experience to have had with your store on the Elm Road location, I had the box to my purchased merchandise w no receipt and i was not asking for my money in return, all I wanted was AN EXCHANGE because I was sold BROKEN merchandise. Store # 03872 – Florence, Al — Bad business practices — have signs on coke products 4 / $4 — had Dr. Pepper (2lts) setting in front of sign — said that Dr. Peppers are not a coke product — Dr Pepper is a coke product — no sign to say that Dr Peppers at not included — just a way to charge you more -… Sad to be doing this — when Walmart is 1/2 mile from this store

  20. Today while shopping in my local store[ #03684] there was a stock boy that kept following me around. I think he was to be filling shelves, but he was not. He really seemed strange. Talking with another customer in the card section she said it has happened to her before. I told her maybe we should call the police, she said that she had complained to the manager but nothing is ever done. The girls working in this store are always so nice that normally its a pleasure to shop there. After today I don’t know if I want to go back. I am a store manager myself and I know that my company would never put up with this.

  21. Discounts are not given! don’t shop there. I shopped the Family Dollar store #07887 at 6039 Kimberly Blvd , North Lauderdale Florida. They have a huge sign on the outside wall advertising up to (red ticketed) 75% off discount-ADDITIONAL discount take off at register (I have pics). I went to their 4 shelf DISCOUNT area where the items were and began my shopping. I had over 12 items. There are signs ON the shelves that reflect the already discounted price on ticket and the NEW “up to 75% off prices. (I took pics of that too!) Once at the register while ringing up items I asked how much did that take off? The lady said “nothing these items are not discounted”. After 20 minutes of going through items, NONE of which were discounted as advertised, I asked for the manager. She said “I am the manager and those items were not discounted”. I asked her to come to the shelf for proof; when she refused I asked for the owner. At first she ignored me but when a customer came up, she said “He’s not here and will tell you the same thing”. She must have known the male customer because he came at me not even having knowledge of the conversation and situation.

    I asked her to show me what items WERE on discounted sale. She again ignored me. She wasn’t wearing a badge and would not give me her name. I called customer service and they called her. She lied and said I had “grabbed items from a different part of the store” which was not true.

    Finally I videoed her conversation and she stopped talking to me because I called the local news station. If they are not going to honor their advertising they will lose my business. I did not spend time shopping there just to get ripped. She allowed another employee to bring her children to work. They were running the aisles, (OSHA would love that) screaming so loud the lady told them to be quiet while the manager was on the phone with C.S. The employee then had her kids watch me in the aisle (I was taking pics). She knew I had the video on and her kids were taking candy and eating it without paying. I went ahead and brought 10 more items to the register from the DISCOUNT SHELF) BUT they were not discounted either. I said I don’t want them, thank you, and left. Most people give in and pay for them. Say ENOUGH and hold those “advertisers” accountable. They had my number but I never heard back. Gave them three chances to do right. Guess the rip off goes all the way to the customer service center. Owner, Leon Levine: if you read this you should do an undercover boss segment on your store!! You would be shocked! Maybe not. I have not experienced this in other stores but then again they don’t advertise fraud to suck you in the store!!! and no, it wasn’t bring your child to work day.
    Beware! I’ve heard employees say they go online to say its a great store; don’t be fooled!!!
