You probably know Nike by the classic Nike swoosh logo symbol, an iconic symbol of the company and athleticism in the 21st century.
Nike, founded in 1964 by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight, with Bowerman pictured below, is a footwear and apparel company who is aptly named after the Greek Goddess of victory.
Nike’s original name was Blue Ribbon Sports. A very smart move to switch the name to Nike, in my opinion. The official name change from Blue Ribbon Sports to Nike Inc., happened on May 30, 1971.
You can probably tell from the below picture that Knight and Bowerman were close friends. Bowerman was actually a mentor and coach to Knight, and eventually the two became very good friends, so close they were comfortable creating a company together. Together they created the original Nike brand and multi-billion dollar company, initially known as Blue Ribbon Sports.
Nike’s headquarters are in Beaverton, Oregon. The chain of Nike stores is the largest seller of athletic shoes and apparel in the world. It’s revenue totaled over $24.1 billion for the fiscal year in 2012 alone.
Nike owns several brands, so it is comprised of much more than initially meets the eye, including Nike Golf, Nike Pro, Nike+, Air Jordan, Nike Blazers, Air Force 1, Nike Dunk, Air Max, Foamposite, Nike Skateboarding, Nike CR7, as well as separate brands it owns including Brand Jordan, Hurley International & Converse.
It is a public company with shares of stock available for sale. The company has a history of two for one stock splits, with 7 in its history. In 2015 it also started a $12 billion dollar stock buy back, a large undertaking that is happening over a longer period of time.
The company is now represented by many of the major athletes of the current times including Tiger Woods and other famous athletes.
