Jack in the Box was not started by someone named Jack. Imagine that.

Cooper the cute dog opens his mouth in the below photo to express his surprise.

Cooper told us he thought Jack in the Box was started by a man named Jack. So you can imagine his surprise when we told him that was not true.

That, or he was just opening his mouth so we would put a Jack in The Box hamburger inside of it.

I, like cute doggie Cooper, always imagined a man named Jack started it, but it was actually started by someone named Robert Peterson.

The reason many people are confused about the founder’s name being “Jack” is the 1995 fictional marketing campaign.

This campaign presented a fictional clown-like character named Jack as the Jack in The Box founder, just for images’ sake, not for truth.

Cooper takes this in below, looking quite serious as he contemplates the reality that companies would really make stuff like this up just for the sake of marketing.

I don’t know why brands try to create the fake backstory’s because they reek of inauthenticity and in my opinion tend to do more to turn customers away than draw them in.

Hollister is one of the other many companies that runs a fictional marketing campaign about the fake founder John Hollister, which you can read more about on the TellHCO page.

The company was founded in 1951, however Peterson was a serial entrepreneur, and had a road side restaurant named Topsy’s Drive-In since 1941 in San Diego.

He ended up renaming the store Jack in the Box, and added a two-way intercom and drive through window, all of which contributed to the Jack in the Box chain’s incredible growth and success.

To help publicize the new store, they put a blow up clown on the roof to draw attention and welcome customers as they came in.

In 1985, they actually renamed it Monterey Jack’s, which caused a crash and burn of sales, and they soon made the switch back to the classic Jack in the Box name.

  1. 11/17/18. Today we left a singing and decided to stop at JITB on Reed rd and 288 because we were hungry. We had a short wait but the young lady in the mic who was taking our order had a hard time getting our order right. The mic is too loud on the drive through & scared my husband. She kept saying the wrong thing. So we get to the window and she had a regular shake they compressed in a smaller cup than the regular size with a soda lid so the shake was less in the cup due to that. We said no cherry & she put it on there anyway. We explained that at the other Jack’s we visit, the cup is a lil bit taller. She’s new and said the other workers have been doing it wrong. A manager eventually stepped in because she got frustrated after she had 2 drink and a shake she was trying to hand us. But it was 1 drink & 1 shake. But we just took it. Someone in the back was apparently yelling at her in the back where she was working because she told them to stop yelling and took her headphones off. Then the manager stepped in to get us our order. The sourdough burgers were so dry and it’s like the put mayo on the sandwich instead of the special sauce that goes on it. We could have went elsewhere and got a better hamburger. This place needs a visit and in the evening/night as well. Drive thru # 147, Latricia was on the ticket. 9:05pm order taken. 168447 was at the bottom of the ticket. I can take a pic and email it later.

  2. Today I went toJack in the box in Anderson Ca to try the new paninis. Service was so slow it took me 23 minutes from the time I placed my order until it was given to me in the drive through and there was only two cars before me and only 4 cars in the parking lot. The cashier short changed me and when I told her about it that very second you acted like I stole the money. The food was horrible as well. I will never go back there and I live in this town. Disappointed. 433 166 604 882 11 date 1/1/2019 @ 15:55 so you know this is legitimate.

  3. I don’t frequently JIB. And while I struggled to make my order (since I’m not familiar with menu), the employee helping me suggested I make it a combo. This saved me a little bit of money which I really appreciate. The employee was really patient with me and friendly. Her name was Jackie, JIB# 3199 in Bakersfield, CA.

  4. Ordered a chicken fajita pita. It was very dry and no taste. Don’t think I will order again. When we went to pick up our free chicken burger because they gave us the wrong food, we were told we needed the managers name that we spoke to. Sorry that was not told to us at that time. They need better training.

  7. Had the fish sandwich combo. The fish was dry and not very hot. The bun was cold and the sauce had an odd bitter taste. Not the kind of meal to get repeat business.

  8. Purchased two meals from jack in the box on Howe ave in Sacramento CA. Not mind i live near this jack on Enterprise and howe. Every time i go here the get my Food its always wrong when i ask for it to be special for example no ketchup or no tomato because my child cant eat this or no Hot on the taco seems to ALWAYS BE WRONG.Now i have reported this to the store manager as well the website looks like tonight they are still doing the same NOT LISTEN. I did not go through the drive thru for THIS I WANT MY MONEY BACK.

  9. Order 538 128 000 202 19, Drive-thru #123 at JIB#820 placed today at 2:13pm.
    Buttery Jack Combo #2 seemed easy enough. Iced coffee requested with willingness for upcharge on drink. Richard asked for the third time and suggestion to just bill be for the iced coffee and instead was served and iced tea. Something simple became very complicated so drink given back and un-happy customer drove away with no drink… Richard was very polite, but Customer service isn’t for everyone…
