Imagine this:

My point is that this may be a common occurrence for you today that you may take for granted, but back before 1953, nobody had the ability to sit in their car, order comfortably, and have food brought out to them in minutes.

The first Sonic opened in 1953, being the first drive-in restaurant in the US and completely revolutionizing the fast food world, and many individuals’ worlds in general.

Now imagine not being able to sit comfortably in your car and order great food. That would be the world without Sonic. Luckily we don’t have to imagine such a place.

SONIC is such a cool, innovative name, that I always thought was chosen because it simply sounds cool to say out loud.

However, it turns out that is not the case. SONIC was originally called “Top Hat”, which doesn’t have much of a ring to it or really any meaning at all.


Sonic’s curbside speaker technology quickly gave the store a slogan for their speedy service, which was, “Service At The Speed Of Sound”.

Very quickly, the owners realized “Top Hat” just wasn’t working for them, but “Service At The Speed Of Sound”, now that sounded cool. Plus it made a cool acronym, SONIC.

It took 7 years, but they eventually changed the name in 1959, going from “Top Hat” *ugh* to “SONIC”, a very good choice and pivot, in my opinion, as it represents their speed of service and it sounds cool, so what more could you want?

Today, Sonic has grown to be an extremely busy and successful chain of restaurants, serving over 3 million hungry and happy customers each day.

  1. I went to the Sonics in O’Fallon Illinois at 745 W Highway 50 and ordered 1 crispy Chk and and what I got was two burnt crispy chicken strips I will be back

    1. My car hop 22 Claire was so welcoming! She’s so cute & welcoming! It was so hot today & she asked us how we were! I should’ve asked her how she was handling the heat! So sweet! She made my day!!

  2. Sonic is on my way to work so I stop often, about 3 times a week, for unsweetened peach tea w extra peach. At least 50% of the time, it gets made wrong. My schedule is tight & I never have time to go back through to get it corrected. Half the time, I end up throwing the drink out. I stopped for tea today. Was given sweetened tea. This is the 2nd wrong drink order this week & it’s only Wednesday. I will start going somewhere else.

    1. I know how you feel Dee, because I always order a Rte.44 cherry lime-ade with strawberry added and I’ve had so many variations made but not the one that I just asked for. Smh.I will usually get cherry flavored Sprite w/out the strawberry or lime flavor or my fave is….they will make it with all 3 flavors but not enuf of each. So it will taste watered down. My surveys have reflected my displeasure.Those drinks Are too expensive for them to not get it rite!

  4. I go to Sonic 2 times a week. Today the onion rings were burnt. The drive thru window was dirty as usual. When I tried to take the survey, it said I had an invalid number. I love the drinks at Sonic and the corn dogs.

  5. I want to compliment the carhop (Vanessa) that served me my order at the Sonic located on Fort Worth Ave in Dallas, TX. She has amazing customer service skills and a very friendly personality. My order was correct and the food was fresh. I will definitely drop by again.

  6. I go to Sonic in Kilgore Texas every morning on my way to work and again when I get off in afternoon to get a route 44 diet vanilla coke. There are 3 of the best workers that Sonic could ever employ working there. Shannon Polk, Chris Mumphrey and Connie. They know my order and they are very friendly every time I see them . Chris even saw me pull in the driveway and recognized my car and gave my order on the speaker before I said anything. LOVE THEM ALL!

  7. I am tired of ordering drinks and not getting what I order or they charge more then there ad says. The morning drinks are a large for 99 cents but no Matter what drink you order it becomes a charge for specialty 1.61 cents. So since I can get the same drink for 1.50 64 oz at stripes I will be going there from now on. And I will do that 5 days a week vs Sonic who never gets my order right weather it is food or drinks for me and my family.

  8. I go to Sonic often,and if they get my order wrong,i just let them know and they made it right. So I’ll always go to Sonic because i really like their drinks.

  9. The time from order to getting my drink was well over 18 minutes. I left before they got to some of the cars before me. I only ordered a drink. My time is worth more than a 1/2 price drink. Starbucks was across the street and is much faster to make a caffeinated drink.

  10. I always go to Sonic. I love the food but today was a bad experience didn’t get the right food and are onion rings was not cooked right.

  11. I love your food and usually have good luck at the American Canyon store. I drove more than a half hour from San Rafael specifically to get a hamburger and tater tots tonight. I areivaed at 10:50 pm and pushed the speaker button. Someone said “Welcone to Sonic May I take your order?” after about eight minutes waiting. I placed my order, or so I thought. But after I said what I wanted no one repeated my order back. I stuck my debit card in where the slot had s green light just as the parking lot and store lights were all turned off. I pressed the red button again after about five minutes and the person said, “We’re closed.” I explained I had already ordered. A lady came outside and said there was “no way they could cook any food now.” She said they were extremely busy and that’s why my order wasn’t processed. This is the worse service and experience I have ever had at any food establishment.

  12. I love this Sonic! So delicious and fast! There’s this funny guy from New York that works there and I remember him specifically because his name is kevin Hart!! Hahahaha I’d come back just to talk to him again, super funny and really nice and the food is always the best!! Keep it up Sonic!!

  14. Yep first time anything wrong. Missing a burger. Called number numerous times, NO answer! Called from two different phones NO answer! Mad!!!
