In 1938 John Fremont “J.F.” “Grandpa” McCullough and his son Alex created the original Dairy Queen soft-serve recipe. They were proud of their creation, and they asked their friend and frequent customer Sherb Noble to serve their soft-serve in his Illinois restaurant.

The first day he offered the new soft-serve recipe, demand went through the roof, and he served 1,600 servings to the hungry, happy customers in only 2 hours.

Due to the incredible success of the ice-cream, Noble and the McCulloughs went on to open the first DQ in 1940, starting with a $.10 ice-cream bar in the US in the town of Joliet, Illinois. The original building stopped serving ice-cream in the 1950s, however the city has kept the building open as a historical landmark at the location 501 N Chicago St, that anyone is welcome to visit.

Shortly after WWII Dairy Queen saw tremendous growth, from its initial paucity of 10 stores nationwide to over 100. Today, DQ has over 6,000 restaurant locations in the US, Canada and 18 other countries, all a landmark to its incredible growth.

    1. Same as the person above wrote. I went to Dairy Queen on 09-14-18 and 09-15-18 and my receipt did not have a code on the receipt.

  16. Tried to do survey and received message stating I had recently did one so I would have to wait 15 days. That is not what it says above where it states “entry limit none” and “you can actually take the survey every time you eat at DQ”. Apparently can’t believe what you read. Guess I will have to wait a minimum of 15 + days between visits or start eating elsewhere.

  17. I am senior citizen with a disability. My visit to DQ on 54 West 14th St , NY, NY 10011 was made excellent by the staff. Keahnna Rivera who was the cashier that took my order was very patient with me because I couldn’t read the prices because of my bad eye-sight. Sarah Pacheco made sure I got seated properly and asked more than once, “if everything was ok for me.” Victoria Vega brought my meal to my table when the food was ready. I like the food is cooked after they take the order and has not been sitting around. Over all the store was clean, bright and cheerful. All the staff seemed to enjoy being at work and working together. The staff knew what they were doing and did an excellent job. As a consumer, I can buy a hamburger and fries anywhere. The only thing that distinguishes a business from another is “EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE.” The staff was well trained, the food was great. When I visit/shop at Union Sq, Manhattan, I will only eat at this DQ. Senior Citizens and people with disabilities are ignored or pushed around in NYC. The staff at DQ didn’t have to be nice, they didn’t have to smile or help me———but they did.

  18. We live three blocks from our Dairy Queen. They never participate with any promotions. We’ve driven 70 miles to different towns with Dairy Queen stores that do participate in promotions and always have great experiences and great food at both.

We go to DQ in Macon, Mo at least every other week, usually fantastic service, sad to say today was horrible, first we had to ask to our drink cups, then the unsweet tea tasted like it had detergent in it; she shrugged it off, then we had to ask for our ice cream sundae that was to be served later,yes 45 minutes later. I could deal with that if it would have been busy but there was only 3 other tablesand the one that came in after we had our meal ate their meal and was served the icecream before we had to ask for ours. very disappointed in our server.   21. I made my purchase on 11/04/18. I attempted to take the Survey on 11/07/18. My code was 812078-8011049-141614. I was told, by the computer, I could not continue based on the code I entered. The numbers were correct and it was only the third day. What happened. I spent $34.73 this visit and we are in there at least once a week. Good food and good service!
